COVID-19: THE BASICS

COVID-19 is the disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

Like influenza or the common cold it is spread by coming in contact with secretions that contain the virus of someone who is infected.

Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

Viruses can survive on hard surfaces for hours to days, so touching a contaminated surface and then your face, eyes, and or lips is one of the ways viruses spread.

Or it might be sharing the space with an infected person who is coughing and sneezing.

The droplets that are expelled when we cough or sneeze can travel through the air, be breathed in by others, and settle on surrounding surfaces.

This is why there is such an importance placed on good hand hygiene, washing hands regularly and/or using alcohol based hand rub after touching surfaces that might be contaminated with virus.

Also maintaining physical distancing which, reduces the likelihood of coming in to contact with the virus and limiting the contact with people suspected or confirmed of having COVID-19.

PLAY YOUR PART IN REDUCING THE SPREAD

We appreciate the anxiety and concern that COVID-19 can cause.

Every individual has a big role to play in reducing the spread of COVID-19.

Wash your hands regularly and if you need to cough or sneeze cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your elbow.

If you are ill, get tested and stay at home.
