What to expect at Omeo District Health Urgent Care Centre

Our Commitment

Our Urgent Care Centre provides safe, compassionate and timely care for the Omeo District community.

Our nurse-led urgent care centre is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide assessment and assistance for urgent health concerns.

The urgent care centre does not provide services you would usually access through your GP such as medical certificates or prescription renewals. For these services please book an appointment with a GP.

On Arrival

One of our highly-skilled Registered Nurse's, or RIPRN, will assess your condition through a process called triage to determine how urgently you need care and the most appropriate treatment.

Depending on your needs, the nurse may consult with a Doctor (GP) or Nurse Practitioner (NP), either by phone or via telehealth (video consultation).

Following your assessment, you may:

  • Receive treatment locally (onsite here at ODH)

  • Be admitted to hospital

  • Be transferred to another health service for further care

Waiting Times

After triage, you may need to wait before treatment. Patients are seen based on the urgency of their condition, not their arrival time. People with serious or life-threatening conditions are treated first. For less urgent conditions, waiting times may be two hours or more, depending on demand and clinical priorities.

Urgent and Emergency Conditions

For urgent or potentially serious conditions, the nurse will arrange medical review and coordinate treatment.

This may include:

  • Consultation with a doctor

  • Consultation with specialist retrieval services – Adult Retrieval Victoria (ARV), Paediatric Infant Perinatal Emergency Retrieval (PIPER), Newborn & Paediatric Emergency Transport Services (NETS or PETS)

  • Observation and treatment at our Urgent Care Centre

  • Admission to our acute ward onsite at ODH

  • Transfer to a larger health service if specialised care is required

  • Discharge with follow-up arrangements

Ambulance Transfers and Membership

We encourage everyone to have Ambulance Victoria Membership. If you need to be transferred to another health service by ambulance, costs may apply if you are not covered by a membership. For more information, visit the Ambulance Victoria website for more information.
